The purpose of the Design Manager role is to ensure the effective application of Client side design management procedures and design standards across Infrastructure capital development projects. 

The Design Manager role will secure the following outcomes:
  • proactive design management is provided to the project
  • the work of the design team is managed and well led – ie, “driven” to achieve outcomes
  • all design deliverables meet the requirements of the brief, and are managed to meet programme
  • the design process imbeds Safety in Design principles and processes
  • each project has a consenting strategy that is actively managed to meet overall project deadlines
  • internal review and approval process are defined and up to date
  • design deliverables are reviewed, approved and signed off in a timely fashion
  • design outputs are reviewed for adequacy, including peer review where necessary
  • the design team performs its work in accordance with client design standards
  • design briefs are prepared and form the basis for engagement of services and on-going management of the team to keep them focused on what is important 
  • sufficient resources, skill and care are applied to the design stages of the project
  • risk and opportunity within the project is actively managed, synergies are maximised and project interfaces managed
  • resources and approaches are shared with other Design Managers contribute to the building and maintenance of a high performing team
Qualifications and experience should include: 
  • a tertiary qualification in Architecture, Engineering or Construction
  • minimum 10+ years design and design management experience on complex infrastructure projects 
  • experience with the formation and briefing of design teams
  • experience with the implementation of safety in design with design teams
  • broad knowledge of industry codes, standards and design criteria in architectural and engineering disciplines
  • demonstrated technical knowledge of architectural and engineering systems, design, applications of engineering methods and materials and applications of BIM
  • proven ability to effectively manage and work with professional, technical contractors
  • excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • proven ability to drive a design team forward positively and manage design outcomes with certainty
  • demonstrated track record of proactively identifying and implementing practical solutions to technical problems
