Job description

A long-established, highly respected specialist geotechnical consultancy is seeking an Engineering Geologist to join their team on a significant programme of work in the Waikato region.

Operating for nearly 40 years and delivering thousands of projects across New Zealand and internationally, this consultancy is recognised for its expertise in geotechnical, earthquake and dam engineering.

With a strong forward workload in mining and large-scale infrastructure, this hire is considered business critical.

Opportunities of this nature are rare in the New Zealand market.

The Opportunity

The successful candidate will be based in Waihi, Monday to Friday, working on technically challenging mining and ground investigation projects.
The company will provide:
  • Fully paid accommodation
  • A $75 per day allowance (per diem)
  • Structured technical mentorship
  • A clear pathway to transition into a full-time Auckland office role after approximately 12–18 months
This structure provides hands-on exposure early in your career, followed by progression into a broader consulting environment — offering both depth and long-term growth.

You will gain experience on complex investigations and specialist drilling programmes that most engineering geologists in New Zealand do not get exposure to at intermediate level.

Responsibilities

You will work across a technically diverse project portfolio including mining, dams and infrastructure projects. Responsibilities include:
  • Organising and supervising ground investigations (drilling, CPT, test pits and specialist methods)
  • Detailed soil and rock logging
  • Installation and monitoring of geotechnical instrumentation
  • Geological mapping and interpretation
  • Assisting with slope stability assessments
  • Technical reporting and client liaison
  • Supporting senior staff on large-scale infrastructure and mining projects
The role is field-intensive and suited to someone who enjoys being on-site and involved in the practical side of engineering geology.

Requirements
  • BSc (Geology / Engineering Geology) or BE (Civil)
  • Relevant NZ experience(Open to exceptional and immediately available graduates)
  • Strong ground investigation and logging capability
  • Comfortable being site-based during the initial 12–18 month period
  • Working toward (or interested in pursuing) professional accreditation
  • Clean NZ driver’s licence
Why Consider This Role?
  • Rare exposure to nationally significant mining and underground projects
  • Structured pathway from field-based project work into an Auckland consulting role
  • Strong mentorship from experienced specialists
  • Long-term career growth within a stable and respected consultancy
  • Competitive salary plus accommodation and daily allowance
This is an excellent opportunity for an Engineering Geologist wanting to accelerate their technical development, gain uncommon project exposure, and position themselves strongly for long-term career progression.

All applications will be treated with strict confidence.
