Water Infrastructure/Civil Engineer

Job description

An established specialist civil engineering consultancy in Auckland is looking to add a technically strong Water Infrastructure/Civil Engineer to join its growing water infrastructure team.

This consultancy works almost exclusively on public sector/local government projects(Watercare/Healthy Waters etc), partnering with councils and asset owners to deliver cost‑effective, technically robust water and flood infrastructure solutions.

Unlike larger multidisciplinary firms, they pride themselves on first‑principles engineering, deep technical specialisation, and producing designs that genuinely perform in the real world.

The Role

This role is firmly hands‑on and technical.

You’ll be involved in the design and delivery of water, wastewater, stormwater, and flood mitigation infrastructure, working alongside highly capable engineers who value maths, science, and sound engineering judgement over box‑ticking.

Projects vary from complex pump stations and pressure networks through to large‑scale flood risk and flow management schemes, often involving challenging hydraulic conditions and high‑flow environments.

This consultancy does not push engineers prematurely into project management. Instead, they focus on developing technically robust engineers with the depth and confidence to own their designs.

Responsibilities

Depending on your experience, this role will involve:
  • Design of pressure and gravity pipe networks
  • Pump station and rising main design, including associated hydraulics
  • Hydraulic and network modelling
  • Supporting flood risk and flow management projects
  • Civil design using Civil 3D / AutoCAD
  • Working closely with senior engineers on technically demanding problems
  • Contributing to design reviews and technical documentation
Experience & Background

You will likely have:
  • 2–5 years’ experience in civil engineering design, ideally within water infrastructure
  • Exposure to pressure mains, pump stations, or water networks
  • A solid understanding of hydraulics principles
  • Experience using Civil 3D / AutoCAD
  • Some exposure to hydraulic or network modelling software
  • Experience working on council or public‑sector projects (Watercare / Healthy Waters exposure is advantageous but not essential)
The Right Person

Cultural fit is important. This role will suit someone who:
  • Enjoys technical engineering and solving difficult problems
  • Appreciates maths, science, and first‑principles thinking
  • Is humble, curious, and keen to keep learning
  • Wants to become a genuinely capable water infrastructure engineer
  • Is not in a rush to move into people management or PM roles
Why Consider This Opportunity?
  • Work on technically challenging, meaningful infrastructure projects
  • Learn from engineers who are highly regarded for their technical capability
  • Exposure to complex hydraulics, modelling, and real‑world engineering problems
  • Be part of a consultancy that delivers better value solutions than much larger rivals
